“At my annual full body skin exam, the melanographer found a small pin-sized spot on my ear and recommended I have it examined further. It turned out to be cancerous. If it wasn’t for MoleMap, it would have gone unnoticed.”

Your questions, answered

Who’s the best person to check for skin cancer?

Many people visit their GP if they spot a new or suspicious-looking mole. Some GPs specialise in skin health and can perform a skin examination. But, in many cases, if melanoma or skin cancer is suspected, your GP will  refer you to a dermatologist or skin cancer doctor.

Wait times for dermatologists can be lengthy. In some cases, the average wait time can be four months or more. When you’re worried about skin cancer, the last thing you want to do is wait. MoleMap skin cancer clinics combine the expertise of melanographers with the specialist skill of dermatologists. Your skin will be thoroughly checked by a melanographer using advanced technology. At risk moles will be imaged and sent for further assessment and diagnosis by an accredited dermatologist. No referral necessary, which means you get peace of mind faster.

Are skin checks free in New Zealand?

Free mole checks are sometimes available through charity organisations or pop-ups at community events. These events are not intended to replace a professional mole check.

Which is the most common type of skin cancer in New Zealand?

Basal cell carcinoma is the most common type of skin cancer in New Zealand. Every year, an estimated 90,000 non-melanoma skin cancers are diagnosed. Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) accounts for 80% of these non-melanoma skin cancers. The good news is that relatively few people die from BCC. If detected early, the treatment success rate for BCC is high.
