How should I prepare for my St Andrews mole check?
Before you visit our skin check clinic, St Andrews, it pays to prepare your skin. This helps to ensure an accurate examination of your entire body. We recommend:
- Not wearing moisturiser, nail polish or sunscreen to your appointment
- Refraining from fake tanning prior to your skin check
- Wearing plain underwear (You’ll keep this on during your skin check. Unless there’s a particular spot of concern you want examined.)
- Checking your own skin. If you notice anything of concern we can examine it during your skin check.
What happens if a suspicious mole is detected at my St Andrews mole check?
If a suspicious mole is detected during your visit to our St Andrews skin cancer clinic, it will be dermoscopically (under the skin) imaged and sent for dermatologist diagnosis. If skin cancer is suspected, a biopsy will usually be recommended. This is a small surgical procedure carried out under local anaesthetic. A sample of tissue is removed for testing. The skin sample is looked at under a microscope to check for skin cancer.
What’s the difference between a skin check and mole mapping?
At MoleMap St Andrews, our SkinCheck is a comprehensive, point-in-time skin and mole check service. Suspicious lesions are imaged using a dermatoscope and sent for dermatologist diagnosis. This is ideal if you notice a new or changing mole or lesion and want it checked out fast. Or, if you want the reassurance that your skin is healthy at this point in time.
NOTE: SkinCheck+ offers all the benefits of a SkinCheck with the addition of full body imaging. Our skin is always changing, a photographic record makes it easy to spot new moles and take action.
Mole mapping involves taking a series of around 28 images of the body. This creates a digital mole map, which is used as a reference to spot changes over time. Individual mole mapping is included in our Full Body MoleMap. This is our most comprehensive skin check and mole check service. It includes:
- A head-to-toe skin check
- Full body imaging
- Individual mole mapping
- Dermatologist diagnosis
- Proactive skin surveillance
- Unlimited free spot checks between annual appointments
- Education on skin cancer risk + prevention
