What treatments are used for skin cancer?

The most common treatment for skin cancer is surgery. This is where the cancerous lesion and some of the surrounding healthy skin is removed. This is usually done under a local anaesthetic.

Some superficial skin cancers can be treated topically with creams or gels. These are generally prescribed chemotherapy medicines that can be directly applied to the skin. Laser therapy is another form of skin cancer treatment. It uses a combination of a red-light, LED-light and a cream. The laser destroys the abnormal or cancerous cells without the need for surgical removal.

Cancer treatment will depend on the type and stage of cancer. Read more about skin cancer treatment. Following a skin cancer diagnosis, your dermatologist will explain your choices and guide you on the right skin cancer treatment for you. The good news is that if skin cancer is found early, the chance of successful treatment is very high.
