“At my annual full body skin exam, the melanographer found a small pin-sized spot on my ear and recommended I have it examined further. It turned out to be cancerous. If it wasn’t for MoleMap, it would have gone unnoticed.”

Your questions, answered

How common is skin cancer in New Zealand?

Skin cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in New Zealand. Every year, approximately 80,000 people are diagnosed with skin cancer. More than 6,000 of these diagnoses are melanoma. This is the deadliest form of skin cancer, accounting for around 80% of all skin cancer deaths.  More than 90% of skin cancers are a result of overexposure to UV rays.

The positive news is that being sun smart (reducing exposure to UV light) can help prevent skin cancer. Plus, most skin cancers can be successfully treated—if detected early. Take care of your skin — book a skin check in Nelson today.

What does skin cancer look like?

Common signs of skin cancer can include:

  • A freckle, patch, or mole with irregular borders
  •  A firm lump or nodule A spot with a spreading or notched edge
  • A mole that varies in colour (grey, pick, brown, black)
  • A mole that’s increased in size A crusty sore that bleeds or won’t heal
  • A dry, scaly patch of skin that’s shiny/pearlescent and pink or red in colour
  •

It’s important to regularly check your skin and look for a spot or mole that’s sore, abnormal, changing, or new. Find out more about the SCAN Your Skin method.

How much is a skin check in Nelson?

At MoleMap’s skin cancer clinic Nelson, the cost of a skin check will depend on the type of service you choose. Our most comprehensive mole mapping service is our Full Body MoleMap. This includes full body imaging, individual mole plotting and ongoing, proactive skin monitoring. It is recommended for anyone with a medium to high risk of getting melanoma. For people at low risk or who have spotted a new or changing mole, we suggest having a SkinCheck. You can choose to have it with (SkinCheck+) or without total body imaging). For information on the pricing and to compare skin check page.

How should I prepare for my Nelson mole check appointment?

Before attending your appointment, we recommend removing any makeup, fake tan and nail polish. This gives our melanographers a clear view of your skin. You might also like to do a DIY check of your skin beforehand. This gives you the opportunity to bring up any concerns you might have. It’s okay to moisturise your skin before your skin check.

You’ll need to undress for your skin examination (leaving your underwear on), so wear clothing that’s easy to remove and comfortable. Don’t worry, our friendly and caring team will ensure you feel comfortable and a gown will be provided to ensure your modesty is protected.
